Seasonal Aromatherapy: Arnica Flower
by Raquel Rzepecki

As the season changes to autumn the shifting temperatures and shifting energy patterns make us vulnerable to colds, flu and fatigue. Nourishing yourself with essential oils and herbs that help support our immune system and adrenal systems will keep us strong and healthy in the months to come.
Herbal infused oils are carrier oils that have had herbs steeped in the oil to release their therapeutic properties.

Arnica Flower:
Arnica is a graceful woodland plant in the same family as the sunflower, native to Central Europe and the western United States. Its yellow flowers are collected art summer's end and dried for medicinal use and has been used for centuries to alleviate muscular pain, bruising, sprains, and inflammation. Applied topically, Arnica is believed to disperse stagnant, disorganized fluids from bruised tissue. Arnica stimulates white blood cell activity and increases circulation, boosting the body’s self healing mechanism.

Arnica Infused Oil

Two 1-quart canning jars
Arnica flower heads to fill 2 jars
16 ounces safflower oil
Cheesecloth or muslin bag

Densely pack a canning jar with Arnica Flower heads and cover completely with safflower oil to the rim of the jar. Place lid tightly on jar, label with name and date, and leave in a sunny windowsill for 2-3 weeks. Using cheesecloth or muslin bag, strain the mixture into a container. Now repeat the process, but now use the infused oil to fill the jar and let steep for an additional 2-3 weeks. Strain the mixture and store in a colored glass bottle.

CONTRAINDICATIONS
Do not apply Arnica to open wounds or ulcerated skin. Arnica increases blood flow and will impede clotting. Do not use Arnica during pregnancy or while nursing. Do not use Arnica if you have a daisy allergy. If taking blood thinning medication, consult physician or medical practitioner prior to using Arnica.
